All In A Matter Of Minutes

About a month and a half ago I got to be a part of an original song cycle by a student at SUU named Brandon Grayson. He composed and wrote the whole thing and Second Studio put it on as part of their season. We had 27 days to put it together for a total of 4 performances. Below is a link to a recording that was posted to youtube. The quality is a little rough, but it's fun to be able to watch=]

When I auditioned for this show, I sang "Quiet" by Jonathan Reid Gealt. It was a piece that Alec and Carly had recommended I sing and use for this audition. I took their word for it and dived right in.
Plus, Alec was directing and Carly was co/assistant directing. So I was gonna trust their judgement.

PAUSE
I swear.
Alec and Carly know what works well for my best and what I should sing better than I do.
It's nice, but what am I gonna do when I graduate and they aren't here...

Anyhow.
Minutes.

I auditioned and felt just...awful about it. I felt like it sounded terrible and that I had dropped the ball. Which I was really bummed about because I was really hoping to be cast. But Carly and Alec both came up to me during rehearsal for Toyland and told me how proud they were and how amazing I had sounded and that it was the best sound they had ever heard from me...it was crazy.

I ended up getting a callback which was super exciting. They had all of us line up (ya know, like you do) and then they called us forward one by one or so just to see what we all looked like side by side. After that they let some people go and the rest of us they had us do some scales with Brandon one by one. Eventually they had all gone and it was just me left and Alec peeked his head out and was like "oh. you're still here. Good. " He motioned for me to come inside (the blackbox) and he and Carly and Brandon were all smiling and they told me that I was cast...it was actually kind of comical because they had assumed I had already left because they had already cast me and assumed I knew that and we all kind of laughed and it was great=]

When the list went up, Brandon told us to watch our emails over semester (Christmas) break because he was going to start emailing us all the music so we could learn it and get started.

Well...break came and went and we got one song. Which was frustrating. But I was trying to be professional and I was trying to be supportive because I really was excited.

But as the rehearsal process went on, I grew more and more stressed and annoyed. The music wasn't ready when we were told it was going to be and music rehearsals were sort of sloppy at times. Luckily the 6 of us who were cast were all talented musicians and able to read music and pick up on things really quickly or we would've been screwed. That being said, we were still trying to memorize during our tech rehearsals because we were so behind.

Alec and Carly blocked the show in...2 and 1/2 rehearsals I think...it was really such a treat to get to watch them block and to be a part of their creative process. The two of them are such inspirations to me. I really don't know what I would do without them.

I was thrilled to be able to help Brandon put this all together and showcase his work. It was a pleasure working with Al and Carly and I loved most of the music of the show.

But at the end of it all, Brandon is still a student. He is learning and growing just as much as the rest of us. And it showed in some of his pieces. Definitely his work ethic. He is brilliant at finding harmonies and chords and music. But his lyrics could really use some work. And he could use some help and guidance when it comes to leading a music rehearsal. All though, he has gotten much better since our music rehearsal at Lake Powell last summer. And I can see how much he is growing. I just wish he wasn't so...content with where he is right now.

Everyone was so complimentary of his show, even the adjudicator we had come, that I don't know if he truly benefited and received the guidance he could really use at this stage in his life.

But who am I to judge right? It's not my place.

Overall, I really enjoyed being a part of his show. We're hoping to perform it for the Excellence Festival in a month. But we haven't heard anything from him about rehearsing or anything so...we'll see if that actually happens.

I wish that he had had a little more guidance and help as he was writing...Peter sort of just told Second Studio that they were going to let Brandon write something but then...that was it. No one was there to really hold Brandon accountable for writing his own show. Which, it's crazy that someone should even have to do that. But Brandon really dropped the ball I think. And what could've have been an incredible show, turned out to kind of just be...a show. That he had to cut 3 songs from because he ran out of time to write them. To the point where Alec said, "they will either have their music on stage for those songs or you will cut them". Because it was the weekend before tech started and we still didn't have them.

At the end of it all, Brandon said he was happy with where the show was at, but I could tell he wished it was a little more than what it was. And that was disheartening to see in his eyes. He knew about this since the end of last spring semester but he didn't do anything about it...he was so busy saying yes to so many other things and sharing his talents in so many other ways that he didn't leave enough time to really work on his own show. And that's a sad realization.

We work so hard in life to try and get everything done. We try to do this and that and the other that we lose focus and get off track of what we should really be focusing on. We forget that we ourselves are just as important, if not more at times. We have to take care of ourselves as well...we can't just spread ourselves so thin in a mad game of people pleasing. All we have is a matter of minutes.

And if there's one thing I learned from this show, it's that we should be wise when it comes to using those minutes.
